Some Practical Information for UK Visitors

Karen Brooks

 

Karen Brooks has worked for the SETsquared Partnership in communications and management roles for seven years.

She led the team that developed Europe's most successful University collaboration, government funded incubation programme which has provided support to over 200 early stage technology companies and helped create over £200m of value. Karen also developed the SETsquared enterprise brand for the Universities of Bath, Bristol, Southampton and Surrey. Karen has been key in the development of the successful UK US Science Bridge programme with UCSD and UCI. This programme has delivered over a five times return on investment. The programme supported start-ups wishing to access US and European markets and linked academics from SETsquared's institutions with UCSD and UCI for applied research projects.

Karen has also worked for Motorola and Compass Group in strategic development of communications activities and project management roles. She has over 15 years of marketing, communications and PR experience in a range of industries including IT, Telecoms and FMCG.

Sarah De'Lacy

Sarah De'Lacy is Centre Director for Surrey's SETsquared Business Acceleration Centre and Operations Manager for the Surrey Technology Centre.

As part of the SETsquared partnership of the universities of Bath, Bristol, Southampton and Surrey, the SETsquared Centre helps accelerate the development of technology-based start-up companies both from the University's research base and from the private sector. By managing both Centres this enables Sarah to grow ventures from the Acceleration Centre into the 74,000 sq ft Surrey Technology Centre which provides space for small technology (research, development and design) companies in one of the most prestigious Science Parks in the UK - The Surrey Research Park.

Sarah was one of the founders of the Surrey 100 Club and is also on the Steering Committee. The 100 Club provides the foundations for venture creation by enabling its members to take an active role in tomorrow's success stories and by providing investment and mentoring to SETsquared's ventures.

Sophie Hill

Sophie Hill is the Centre Manager for Surrey's SETsquared Business Acceleration Centre for the past five years. She is responsible for managing the day to day running of the SETsquared Centre, responding to and resolving members' issues. Sophie is responsible for assessing viability and suitability of new applicants for the centre and analysing SETsquared expenditure to ensure budget limitations are adhered to. She manages the review process and entry process for new companies: SETsquared offering, induction to facilities, understanding and signing of Terms & Conditions of membership. She works closely with the mentor network identifying synergy between mentors and companies and organises training programmes, events and seminars relevant to the member’s needs and skill gaps.
